The meteors

The meteors

Fine art print on Hahnemühle Photo Rag® Satin 310 gsm paper, 85x55 cm.

Department of Lavalleja, Uruguay. December 2020.

Meteors (shooting stars) originate when meteoroids enter the Earth's atmosphere from interplanetary space, producing a flash of light. Meteoroids can be fragments of asteroids or comets ranging in size from microns (particles) to metres. Most disintegrate completely in the atmosphere, but the larger ones may survive and reach the Earth's surface, becoming meteorites. Meteors can be sporadic, or form part of so-called ‘meteor showers’, usually associated with a comet, which occur every year when the Earth encounters the swarm of rocky particles left behind by the comet along its orbit. In the picture, the ‘Geminids’ meteor shower over the Sierras de Minas.
